I have shared in the recipe card below on how to bake these Hasselback sweet potatoes in the oven.
Why You Will Love This Recipe
- Baked in the air fryer – faster than the oven.
- Quick to prepare.
- Seasoned with fresh garlic, rosemary and cumin.
- Perfect potato side dish for Fall and Thanksgiving.
How Do You Slice Hasselback Sweet Potatoes?
Carefully! Use a long bladed sharp knife to make even slices along the potato, but not all the way through.
It’s like giving your potato a stylish haircut!
One effective technique for achieving even slices is to place chopsticks alongside the potato.
Serving as a guide to stop your knife from cutting all the way through.
However, it’s important to note that sweet potatoes often have an irregular shape, which may affect the efficacy of this method.
Can I Bake Them In The Oven?
Yes, of course! Don’t have an air fryer? Bake your sweet potato hasselbacks in the oven instead, here’s how:
- Preheat Oven: To 400°F (200°C) fan-forced. Grease a baking sheet with oil or butter or line it with parchment paper.
- Prep the Potatoes: As per the recipe instructions and place them on your prepared baking sheet.
- Bake: For 50 minutes – 1 hour, until soft on the inside, depending on the size of your sweet potatoes.
- Brush: After baking, brush remaining oil glaze you kept aside over each potato for that extra oomph in flavor and sheen.
Why Are My Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes Not Crispy?
Make sure you brush each sweet potato generously with the oil glaze and do not overcrowd your air fryer basket.
Also, don’t cut your slices too thick, aim for thin uniform cuts all the way along the potato.
Olive oil creates crispy potatoes as it aids in even heat distribution.
Allowing the potato’s surface to dehydrate quickly in the air fryer.
Resulting in a crispy outer layer. Essentially, the oil “fries” the potatoes.
Can I Add Different Toppings?
Absolutely! You can use the garlic oil glaze as a base to marinate your potatoes and add any of these toppings after they’ve baked:
- Shredded Parmesan Cheese: Sprinkled over the hot baked potatoes to serve.
- Chopped Pecans: Use roasted pecans to infuse the flavor of Fall!
- Fresh Thyme: Small bunch roughly chopped and sprinkled over the top to serve.
- Crispy Bacon Bits: Sauté some diced bacon separately and serve them on top of your baked Hasselback sweet potatoes.
- Sliced Green Onions: Also known as spring onions! Adds color and flavor.
- Maple Syrup: A no-brainer. Sweet potato + maple = FALL!
- Butter: Who can resist warm melting butter in those potato crevices?
How Long Do They Take To Cook In The Air Fryer?
Hasselback sweet potatoes take between 25 – 45 minutes in the air fryer with a temperature of 400ºF or 200ºC.
This depends on the size and thickness of the sweet potatoes you choose to use.
Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
A comprehensive recipe card featuring all the ingredients can be found at the end of this post.
- Sweet Potatoes: Aim for small to medium size sweet potatoes. Not too large as they may not fit in the air fryer basket and will take too long to bake.
- Olive Oil: Creates the best crispy exterior. Can be substituted with another vegetable oil of your choosing.
- Fresh Garlic: Can be substituted with garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder in place of the 3 garlic cloves.
- Fresh Rosemary: Homegrown or store-bought. Substitute with fresh thyme or sage.
- Ground Cumin: Adds depth of flavor, omit if you don’t have it on hand or replace with an equal amount of ground paprika or ground caraway.
- Salt & Pepper: To season.
Step By Step Instructions (with photos)
There is a full and detailed recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step one: In a small mixing bowl, combine olive oil, minced garlic, chopped rosemary and cumin. Season with salt snd pepper.
Whisk until well combined. Set aside while you prepare your potatoes.
Step two: Cut the sweet potatoes widthways into fan-like cuts, about 3mm-4mm in thickness, do not cut all the way through.
Place potatoes on a baking sheet.
Step three: Generously brush the oil glaze over each potato and between the cuts, leaving about 1/4 of the glaze to brush over potatoes once cooked.
Step four: Place potatoes in the air fryer basket. Tip: For best results, don’t overcrowd basket if potatoes are too large, cook them in batches.
Step five: Bake at 400ºF (200ºC) for 25-45 minutes depending on the size of your potatoes, until crispy, golden, and soft on the inside.
Tip: Poke a sharp pointed knife or fork into the middle of the potatoes, through one of the cuts to check for doneness.
Step six: Remove from basket and brush some extra oil glaze over each.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
Expert Tips
Cut Potatoes Slowly: Take it slow, no need to rush when cutting your potatoes into fan-like slices. Be careful not to cut all the way through to the bottom.
Rotate: Some air fryers have hot spots. Rotate your potatoes halfway through air frying for even cooking.
