Ingredients you’ll need

These easy Granola Bliss Balls use a combination of classic granola ingredients with a few simple ingredients to bind everything together.

  • Rolled Oats: Old-fashioned rolled oats form the base of the bliss balls and provide a hearty, chewy texture.
  • Rice Krispies: Also known as Rice Bubbles, these add a light and crispy texture. If you’re in the US or Canada, Rice Krispies can be used.
  • Almonds: Roughly chopped almonds add texture and nuttiness to the bliss balls. You can use another type of nut if preferred.
  • Flax Seeds: Flax seeds add extra texture and can be replaced with chia seeds.
  • Sultanas: Sultanas add natural sweetness and chewiness. Raisins or other dried fruit can be used instead.
  • Cinnamon: A small amount of ground cinnamon adds warm flavour and complements the granola ingredients.
  • Almond Butter: Almond butter helps bind the ingredients together while adding richness. Peanut butter or another nut butter can be substituted.
  • Coconut Oil: Melted coconut oil helps bring the mixture together and firms up when chilled.
  • Maple Syrup: Pure maple syrup adds sweetness and helps bind the ingredients.
  • Vanilla Extract: Vanilla enhances the flavour of the oats, nuts, and cinnamon.
  • Mini Dark Chocolate Chips: Mini chocolate chips add little bursts of chocolate throughout the bliss balls. Regular chocolate chips can also be used.

Refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post for a full list of ingredients and quantities.

Ingredient substitutions

  • Almonds: Replace the almonds with cashews, pecans, walnuts, or another nut you enjoy.
  • Sultanas: Replace with raisins, dried cranberries, dried apricots, or currants.
  • Almond Butter: Peanut butter or cashew butter can be used instead. Tahini can also be used for a nut-free option.
  • Maple Syrup: Honey or agave syrup can be used instead.
  • Chocolate Chips: Use regular chocolate chips instead of mini chocolate chips, or choose milk or semi-sweet chocolate.

Sam’s expert tips

  • Check the consistency: Before rolling, press some of the mixture between your fingers. It should hold together easily. If it’s too crumbly, blend for a little longer.
  • Don’t over-process: Stop blending once the mixture forms a fine crumb and holds together. Keeping some texture makes the bliss balls more enjoyable.
  • Add the chocolate chips last: Pulse the chocolate chips briefly after the main mixture has come together so they remain slightly chunky rather than becoming completely blended into the mixture.
  • Use a cookie scoop: A small cookie scoop makes it easier to create evenly sized bliss balls.

Notes

Depending on the ingredients you have available, you can make a few simple substitutions in these Granola Bliss Balls.
  • Use raisins instead of sultanas. Raisins can be substituted for the sultanas in equal quantities.
  • Use chia seeds instead of flax seeds. Chia seeds can be substituted for flax seeds in equal quantities.
Tips for Success:
  • Make sure the mixture holds together. After blending, the mixture should be sticky enough to press and roll into balls. If it is too crumbly, blend for a little longer or add a small amount of extra almond butter.
  • Don’t over-process the mixture. Blend until the ingredients form a fine crumb and hold together, but don’t process until completely smooth. Some texture from the oats and nuts is ideal.
  • Add the chocolate chips at the end. Pulse them briefly after the main mixture has come together so they remain partially intact throughout the bliss balls.
  • Chill the bliss balls before serving. Refrigerating them for at least 30 minutes helps them firm up and makes them easier to handle.
  • Freeze for longer storage. The bliss balls can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes or in the refrigerator overnight.
